Higher contrast ratios overall give you an image that is more crisp and clear. There are some projectors out there that have a much higher amount of lumens. Even though 1,200 is decent enough to see the projected image, you can only really see it clearly if you are in a completely darkened room.
HDR has a bigger impact than the step up to 4K on improving perceived image quality. In principle, projectors with HDR support are generally better choices than equivalent models without it, but be sure to check how well it works. For fully portable projectors, 4K isn't an option at this writing. For pocket projectors, brightness is even lower, and the resolutions are lower as well, making even 640-by-360 resolution well worth considering. But the more affordable models you're more likely interested in use 1,920-by-1,080 chips combined with pixel shifting. They work by breaking 4K images into multiple sets of 1,920-by-1,080 pixels, and then shifting the pixel position slightly for each set to put more pixels on screen for each frame than are in the chips themselves.
Best Under 500: EUG 3500 Lumens
All the same, our reviewer considers it a minor issue, but still one worth mentioning. Many are portable enough to travel with, or at least to move easily from room to room. (The main exception is a home theater projector, which you’d most likely want to permanently install.) The gaming projectors we’ve seen are easy to bring along to a LAN party.
What makes this one stand above all other cheap HD projectors is its higher contrast ratio, brighter images, and upgraded cooling system that prevents it from overheating. The contrast ratio and brightness add to the visuals just as much as the resolution does. They are also the brightest kind of projector by a very long way. Even some of the most powerful LED and lamp products on the market will struggle to keep up with the brightness of a “basic” laser projector. They provide exceptional contrast, have a much wide color range than lamp projectors, and they are incredibly energy efficient too. While researching the best home projector screens, we examined hundreds of buyer and expert ratings and reviews of countless units.
The Smartest Projector
Home projectors and business models can overlap more than you might expect. For portable models and some entry-level projectors, you'll often see little or no difference between home and business categories for how well the projectors handle film and video. Some manufacturers even include a subset of their models on lists for both categories.
The fact is, you just don't get TV-level performance for that kind of money. The Epson Home Cinema LS11000 is similar to the Epson 5050 but instead of a lamp it uses a laser and phosphor combo to create light. This means even better color, no lamp replacements, faster turn on/off and a more usable dynamic contrast ratio.

Epson's LCD-based EpiqVision Ultra LS500 is available with or without a screen, and costs more than some DLP-based projectors. But it offers good color accuracy, high brightness, and an image free of rainbow artifacts. The Epson EpiqVision Mini EF12 is a smart TV masquerading as a portable projector. Its small form manages to contain a long-lived laser light source, Android TV, Google Play Store apps and games, and even good audio. These features vary so much because you can use a projector at home in so many different ways. And models that are best for either of those tasks may or may not be good choices for, say, gaming.
A more advanced different pixel shifter means better resolution than the 5050 as well. It's more expensive to start, but over the life of the projector they should be about the same. So better picture quality for roughly the same total cost of ownership makes this well worth considering over the 5050.Read our Epson Home Cinema LS11000 review.
For home theater, TV replacements, and gaming, 4K resolution is affordable enough today to be the preferred choice, while 1080p is the budget choice. Lower resolution costs still less, but even a 720p image will be noticeably soft-focus compared with 1080p at the image sizes you'll likely be using for these applications. Another key feature for gaming is how well the projector reveals shadow detail. The quicker you can spot what's going on in dark areas, the quicker you'll see an opponent sneaking up on you or spot other objects of interest.
Despite the lightweight build, it comes with stakes and support rods so it can stay in place even in windy conditions. They’re not like the projectors of the past, though, and the modern portable mini projector boasts a wide range of features for watching indoors, outdoors, downstairs, and up. They have wifi connectivity, streaming capabilities, and surround sound features. To top it all off, they fit snugly in your pocket or your stylish backpack so you can entertain wherever you are. As you can imagine, the light source of a projector is very important as it’s what will mainly determine the brightness, reliability, and picture quality of your final image. There are three main light sources to choose from – lamp, laser, and LED.
